RORY MCILROY MADE a disappointing start to his title defence at the Players Championship, with a round of 79 leaving him 14 shots off the pace at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida.
McIlroy triumphed at the 2019 edition of the tournament which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the four-time major winner struggled in his opening round, which began with a double-bogey on the 10th hole.

Following a bogey on the 13th, the situation worsened for McIlroy at 18 as his ball ended up in the water on the way to a quadruple bogey.
His back nine featured three birdies and three bogeys, leaving him on seven-over-par heading into tomorrow’s second round.
The lead is currently held by Sergio Garcia, whose seven-under round has left him three strokes clear of Matthew Fitzpatrick and Corey Conners.
Graeme McDowell finished up on one-over, while Shane Lowry has just teed off.
